Monteen Castle
The castle of the Monteen belonged to the MacCarthy Reagh, and in particular was the propriety of Dermod Maol MacCarthy the leader of the rebellion in Carbery after the battle of Kinsale.
Associated with the site are the sept O’Crowley mac y Vallirghty of the Montyn who acted as wards of the castle. When Dermod Maol MacCarthy was killed in April 1602 his proprieties were confiscated as were those of the O’Crowleys mac y Vallirghty of the Montyn and the O’Crowley Og of Burrane.
